Steel Agricultural Building in Columbia, North Carolina

Sunward Steel Buildings, Inc., had the honor of manufacturing and supplying this prefabricated steel agricultural building in Columbia, North Carolina, in May of 2011.

Ever since, it has functioned as an agricultural shop on the grounds of the Cherry Farms Seed Company, which grows and harvests wheat and soybean seeds. Following production, the company distributes its soybean and wheat seeds to a broad number of regional and national brands, and it also produces and maintains early-generation seed stocks and performs other field crop production efforts.

Affordable, Low-Maintenance Farm Buildings

Pre-engineered steel buildings offer affordable, low-maintenance alternatives to traditional wooden farm and agricultural buildings. In addition to holding their own in the face of moisture, strong winds, extreme temperatures, and similar hazards, steel farms and agricultural buildings are also highly sustainable, meaning they are completely recyclable once they are no longer in use. A sparsely populated community in eastern North Carolina’s Tyrrell County, Columbia sits about 153 miles east of Raleigh and about 78 miles outside Greeneville, North Carolina.

Building Specifications

Offering supreme strength, durability, and energy efficiency, the metal shop provides a safe, covered space to store agricultural and farm equipment used in the production of wheat and soybean seeds. Constructed using rugged, heavy-duty steel components, the shop is 100’x80’x20’ once raised and has a wide clear span that maximizes floor space and high overhead clearance that allows for the storage of oversize items or equipment.

Boasting an attractive Stone Beige exterior and a complementing Galvalume steel roof with White trim and a 2:12 pitch, the steel shop is both fashionable and functional, and it blends well aesthetically with the surrounding farm landscape. It has (5) doors ranging in size offering easy access inside, among them (2) 3’4”x7’2” walk door openings, (1) 12’x12’ overhead door opening, (1) 8’x9’ overhead door opening, and (1) 16’x16’ overhead door opening. It also has (8) translucent Hi-Rib panels serving as skylights, including (2) 5’-8’ panels and (6) 11’-4’ panels.

Other notable features and customizations include (2) 10’ ridge vents with dampers, chain loops and 9” throats, a wall liner with trim, and several climate-related customizations, among them a 120-mph wind speed rating and a 7-psf snow load.
