Energy-Efficient Shop and Office Complex in North Charleston, South Carolina
Sunward Steel Buildings, Inc. manufactured these (3) rugged, pre-engineered metal buildings for use in North Charleston, South Carolina, in February of 2014.
Now the headquarters for Lim-Ric, a top-ranked plumbing and HVAC repair services provider, the energy efficient, steel complex includes offices and a shop spanning three attached buildings, one of which boasts a gable roof and the other two, single-slope roof designs.
To enhance overall durability, the facility’s proximity to the coast and the area’s propensity for strong, unpredictable weather and wind patterns, the complex also features a high, 169-mph wind speed rating with an additional safety factor and a five psf ground snow load. Durable, economical and easily adaptable in the event of future growth needs, this combination shop and office allows the company to better accommodate its growing list of plumbing, heating and air-conditioning clients.
South Carolina’s third-biggest city, North Charleston had land within Berkeley, Charleston and Dorchester counties. It sits just north of the city of Charleston and about 16 miles from Folly Beach.
Its striking, contemporary exterior includes numerous custom touches, among them a brick facade over the Misty Gray panels and (14) 3’x7’ framed windows that allow for ample natural sunlight inside. The buildings themselves all differ in size, with the first standing 60’x145’x16/16’, the second, 42’x18’x16/16’, and the third, 28’x12’x16/16’, and distributed throughout them are (6) framed openings. These include (2) 3’4”x7’2” framed openings featuring (2) 3’4”x7’2” walk doors and (4) 10’x10’ openings, each enclosing one of (4) 10’x10’ overhead doors.
To keep energy bills low and employees comfortable, regardless of season, the complex comes equipped with a high-performance insulation package. The business’s office area contains safe, sealed thermal blocks and R-30 insulation over and between the girts and purlins, while its walls contain R-19 insulation reinforced by Insul-Hold, which maximizes energy efficiency while preventing sagging and reducing moisture. The rest of the complex is also highly energy efficient, reducing operational costs, with the remainder of it boasting R-13 insulation in the roofs and R-11 insulation within the walls.
