Sent by Sunward Steel to the scenic mountain community of Ouray, Colorado, in September 2023, this pre-engineered metal building functions as a fabrication shop for SKOL Studio & Design, Inc., an acclaimed designer and builder of architectural metalwork and furniture.

SKOL Studio’s work merges careful craftsmanship with impressive artistic talent, and the owner needed a space that reflected this while allowing for the expansion of SKOL Studio’s operations. This new metal design studio has an eye-catching monitor-style roof and a clear-span floorplan, creating ample space for housing machinery and fabricating products. The building can also accommodate a top-running crane with a 10-ton weight capacity, allowing for easy movement of materials while enhancing productivity for artisans.

Designed to maximize year-round comfort, the steel fabrication shop has 6” of R-19 WMP-VRR-backed insulation in its roof and walls, leading to improved thermal efficiency and a notable reduction in energy expenses. The metal commercial building also boasts impressive aesthetics, featuring Charcoal Gray exterior paint and a complementing Black roof and trim.

Building Specifications

Constructed using rugged, high-end steel parts, the steel art studio and fabrication shop is 60’x100’x25’, while its roof has a 4:12 pitch and a 10’x5’ monitor. Offering easy access inside are:

  • (4) 3070 commercial walk door
  • (1) 22’x16’ insulated steel overhead door
  • (1) 20’x16’ double-slide door
  • (2) 12’x10’ insulated steel overhead doors

There are also (12) 5’x3’ windows and (1) 6’x14’ trapezoidal window distributed throughout the metal building, ensuring abundant natural light for SKOL Studio artisans.

Ouray’s annual snowfall totals trump national averages, with an average of 134 inches of snow falling in the community every year. Engineered to accommodate the region’s heavy snowfall and meet its strict building codes, the steel shop has a 115-mph wind rating and a 65-psf roof snow load.

Part of Ouray County in southwestern Colorado, Ouray sits about 10 miles northeast of Telluride and about 40 miles south of Montrose.
