Rugged, Low-Maintenance Metal Athletic Buildings

Generally cheaper and easier to erect than traditional wood buildings, steel buildings frequently undergo athletic use, serving as indoor tennis courts, basketball courts, gymnasiums or similar recreational buildings. Steel construction is also popular in many summer camp environments and is often the first choice among those wanting rugged, reliable and easy-to-maintain buildings that maintain their functionality through the years despite heavy use and harsh weather. Metal buildings frequently undergo use as mess halls, storage areas, gymnasiums and activity centers on the grounds of summer camps across the nation, among other common applications.

Located in a rural part of Pennsylvania well-known for its summer camps, Greeley is part of Pike County. The area sits roughly 140 miles north of Philadelphia, by car, and roughly 45 miles east of Scranton.

Building Specifications

Rugged, durable and designed to last for generations in Pennsylvania’s variable climate, the metal open-air gym features premium-quality steel construction and stands 70’x130’x14’ in size. It has 260 linear feet of 3’ structural eave extensions that keep the interior dry in inclement weather, making the building’s interior safe for gymnastics. It also has a broad clear span that maximizes usable floor space and high overhead clearance that leaves room for uneven bars, balance beam work and similar equipment and efforts.

The exterior of the steel gymnastics center is Royal Red, matching many of the other structures found throughout the camp’s expansive grounds, and the roof is Dark Green and has Royal Red trim and a 4:12 pitch. Installed in that roof is a 4” layer of WMP-VR faced insulation, which allows the metal gym to maintain a more comfortable interior environment. The open-air gymnastics arena also has several customizations that keep it compliant with building code requirements governing construction in Greeley, including a 90-mph wind speed rating and a 43-psf snow load.
