Prefabricated Metal Animal Shelter in Lansing, Michigan

Sunward Steel Buildings, Inc., was the fabricator and supplier of this preconstructed steel building in Lansing, Michigan, in March of 1998.

These days, the building functions as the Capital Area Humane Society, a local animal shelter that promotes the humane treatment of companion animals throughout Ingham, Eaton, and Clifton counties through protection, placements, and educational efforts. The facility can house up to 400 animals at any given time, and in 2018, CAHS helped place more than 10 animals in loving homes every day, with one animal finding a new family and home every 34 minutes during open hours.

A Critical Resource for the Local Community

In addition to helping cats, dogs, and other animals in need find loving homes, CAHS also offers spaying and neutering services for animals as well as foster programs, volunteer support services, behavioral classes, and a community pet care clinic. In its first seven years in operation, CAHS performed more than 75,000 spay and neuter surgeries in an effort to reduce the number of animals across Michigan in need of new homes.

CAHS’s durable, sustainable steel facility is also inherently fire-resistant, which is important both because of the animals that live inside and because a fire already ripped through an earlier version of the shelter in the 1950s, causing considerable damage and hardship for animals and the facility staff. Offering strength, durability, and versatility, steel buildings made ideal animal shelters because of their affordability, easy customizability, and damage-resistant nature.

Michigan’s state capital, the city of Lansing has land in Ingham, Eaton, and Clinton counties. Located in the south-central part of the state’s Lower Peninsula, Lansing lies about 65 miles northwest of Ann Arbor and about 56 miles northeast of Battle Creek.
