Commercial Metal Building in Alamogordo, New Mexico

Sunward Steel Buildings, Inc., fabricated and provided this pre-engineered steel commercial building in Alamogordo, New Mexico, in January of 2004.

Combining extreme durability with ease-of-erection, this building offers unmatched structural integrity and is part of the infrastructure of the New Mexico Museum of Space History, one of 15 divisions of the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs. The museum serves as a resource that educates the public about New Mexico’s significant role in the history, science and technology of space and contains a wide assortment of exhibits detailing everything from early rocket experiments outside Roswell to mock-ups of the International Space Station.

This particular steel building houses the museum’s expansive Daisy Track, which is a 27-foot-long, 4,500-pound air-powered sled track. Originally housed at Holloman Air Force Base, the Daisy Decelerator played a substantial role in U.S. space history by supporting biological research and mechanical testing ultimately used in NASA flights and the Apollo moon landing, among related efforts.

Building Specifications

Sturdy and secure, this commercial building is comprised of heavy-duty steel parts and stands 50’x60’x12’ once raised. It has a clear-span design and high overhead clearance, improving versatility, and it features a bright White exterior, while its rugged, hardwearing Galvalume roof has a 2:12 pitch and complementing Stone Beige trim.

The building is well-ventilated thanks to (3) 10” ridge vents with 9” throats, dampers, screens and chains, and it has (4) door openings offering convenient access inside. Found throughout the steel building are (2) 4070 framed commercial walk door system and (2) additional overhead door openings.

Other key features and customizations include (6) 8’6.5” translucent wall panels and a 90-mph wind speed rating, the latter of which keeps the metal museum building compliant with building code regulations in place in Alamogordo.
